The Learning Center at Pemaquid Point
Located just across the parking lot from the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, the new Learning Center offers movies, classes and concerts. Programs are all designed to help visitors to Lighthouse Park better understand the area’s history, environment and culture. In 2010, the Center will be equipped with audio/visual equipment to allow us to offer lectures, demonstrations -- even films. We'll also be able to present performers -- particularly those who have a connection with the area. There will be interactive computer displays that will help teach about the unique history of our lighthouse and our history. We also see the Learning Center as a rental space for local organizations; it could even be used for weddings or receptions. “Income from those rentals,” says commissioner Cerina Leeman, “will help fund the projects we’re planning for the center.” Some interior work and furnishing still awaits completion.
The center was built in 2008 with generous donations of time and materials by countless local residents and businesses. In a grand opening ceremony in 2008, Town Administrator Kris Poland called the project “an example of community spirit – something we all can be proud of.” Then-Commissioner Jon LeVeen unveiled plaques, inscribed with the names of volunteers and businesses that contributed labor and materials to the project. A highlight of the event was a moving tribute to Benner, who spearheaded the project from the start and convinced many of Bristol’s contractors to volunteer. He was presented with a plaque recognizing “his tireless enthusiasm and visionary leadership in the creation of the Lighthouse Learning Center.” The inscription added, “without Gordon, supported by his loving wife, Elizabeth, this building, and the benefits it will provide to our community, would not have been possible.”
