The Bath Band Marches into Pemaquid

A summer tradition here on the Pemaquid Peninsula is the annual performance of the Bath Municipal Band. Each year, the band sets up a stage at the foot of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and plays a popular mix of marches, patriotic songs, light classics and pops. This year, Mother Nature had other plans. The threat of heavy rain meant that the performance would have to be moved to the Bristol Consolidated School. There was a hitch, however -- the school's auditorium is under re-construction and wasn't available. But luck was on our side. A few days earlier, the local Lions Club had held their annual auction under a giant tent at the school. After some quick maneuvering, the Parks Commission was able to secure the use of the tent and school parking lot for the concert.

More than 150 people braved threatening skies to come under the tent for a fun evening of lold fashioned band music. The concert started at 7, and ended at 8:30 -- and not a moment too soon. A few minutes later, after everyone had left the area, lightning filled the skies and a powerful thunderstorm moved through the area. The timing was perfect, the chicken barbecue was delicious and the music was superb. Next year, with luck, we'll be back at Pemaquid Point.
